What is Sustainability?

The terms Sustainable and Sustainability are used to describe many
different approaches toward improving our way of life.

Below are some views of what sustainability might mean to you:

  • Economic development, social progress and environmental quality.
  • A business that is run and organised on a set of principles, approaches and tools that focus the business on doing well economically, environmentally and socially.
  • The successful meeting of present social, economic, and environmental needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
  • A community is one that resembles a living system where all of the resources – human, environment and economic – are renewed and in balance forever.
  • Taking the long-term view of how our actions affect future generations and making sure we don’t deplete resources, or cause pollution at rates faster than the earth is able to renew them.
  • Creating an economic system that provides for quality of life while renewing the environment and its resources.

Some of the many uses of the word sustainable include: sustainable business, sustainable development, sustainable living and sustainable community.
